Question 1 of 5
1. Question
With reference to the Battle of Saragarhi, consider the following statements:
1. It was a revolt against the East India Company over oppression by revenue officials, zamindars, and corrupt moneylenders.
2. The seeds of the protracted rebellion were sown in 1832 when the East India Company created the Damin-i-koh region in the forested belt of Rajmahal hills.
Which of the statements given above are correct?Correct
Why this question—>Why September 12 is observed as Saragarhi Day
Statement 1 is incorrect—>Battle of Saragarhi: On September 12 in 1897, 21 soldiers were pitted against over 8,000 Afridi and Orakzai tribal militants and managed to hold down the fort for seven hours. Though heavily outnumbered, the soldiers of 36th Sikhs (now 4 Sikh) regiment, led by Havildar Ishar Singh, fought till their last breath, killing 200 militants and injuring 600. Statement 2 is incorrect—> Saragarhi was the communication tower between Fort Lockhart and Fort Gulistan. The two forts in the rugged North West Frontier Province (NWFP), now in Pakistan. were built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh but renamed by the British. Though Saragarhi was usually manned by a platoon of 40 soldiers, on that fateful day, it was being held by only 21 soldiers from the 36th Sikh (now 4 Sikh) and a non-combatant called Daad, a Pashtun who did odd jobs for the troops. Incorrect

Question 2 of 5
2. Question
Consider the following statements:
1.Analog signals are discrete while digital signals are continuous.
2.Phase Modulation(PM) is unsuitable for TV broadcasts because it’s digital.
3.Lightning produces radio waves that interfere with signals, resulting in static and noise.
4.One of the advantages of PM is that slight changes in signal amplitude won’t degrade the information it carries.
How many of the statements given above are correct?Correct
Why this question—>What are AM, FM, and signal modulation? | Explained – The Hindu
Statement 1 is incorrect—>Analog signals are continuous while digital signals are discrete . Statement 2 is correct—>Phase Modulation(PM) is unsuitable for TV broadcasts because it’s digital. Statement 3 is correct—>Lightning produces radio waves that interfere with signals, resulting in static and noise. Statement 4 is correct—>One of the advantages of PM is that slight changes in signal amplitude won’t degrade the information it carries. This is because the modulating signal is not transmitted by the amplitude of the pulses, so pulse modulation is nearly impervious to amplitude fluctuations produced by interference and noise. Additional Information
- In frequency modulation (FM)we modulate, or adjust, the frequency to transmit a message.
- Amplitude modulation is a process by which the wave signal is transmitted by modulating the amplitude of the signal.
- When we use AM, FM or PM modes to transmit • and – (or 0s and 1s), we have digital transmission. When we use AM or FM to propagate composite waves, it’s analog transmission. Analog signals are continuous while digital signals are discrete
- Phase modulation (PM) is a modulation pattern that encodes information as variations in the instantaneous phase of a carrier wave.
- Phase modulation is widely used for transmitting radio waves and is an integral part of many digital transmission coding schemes that underlie a wide range of technologies like Wi-Fi, GSM and satellite television
- Phase Modulation is generally not used for transmission because it is complex for decoding
- Phase Modulation (PM) is unsuitable for analog radio or TV broadcasts because it’s digital.

2.It is funded through the contributions from the CSR funds of industries working in the district.
3.The composition and functions of the District Mineral Foundation have been laid down by the central government.
How many of the statements given above are correct?Correct
Why this question—>A human touch to India’s mineral ecosystem – The Hindu
Statement 1 is correct—>DMF is a trust set up as a non-profit body under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) (MMDR) Amendment Act 2015. Statement 2 is incorrect—>It is funded through the contributions from the holders of major or minor mineral concessions in the district, as may be prescribed by the Central or State Government. Statement 3 is incorrect—>The composition and functions of the District Mineral Foundation shall be such as may be prescribed by the State Government. Additional Information
- DMF is a trust set up as a non-profit body under the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) (MMDR) Amendment Act 2015.
- Purpose: To work in the interest and benefits of persons and areas affected by mining-related operations in a manner as may be prescribed by the respective State Government.
- The operation of DMFs falls under the jurisdiction of the relevant State Government.
- The fund for DMF is collected at the district level.
Funding:
- The holder of a mining lease or a prospecting licence-cum-mining lease granted on or after the date of commencement of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2015, shall, in addition to the royalty, pay to the District Mineral Foundation of the district in which the mining operations are carried on, an amount which is equivalent to such percentage of the royalty paid in terms of the Second Schedule, not exceeding one-third of such royalty, as may be prescribed by the Central Government.
- The holder of a mining lease granted before the date of commencement of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2015, shall, in addition to the royalty, pay to the District Mineral Foundation of the district in which the mining operations are carried on, an amount not exceeding the royalty paid in terms of the Second Schedule in such manner and subject to the categorization of the mining leases and the amounts payable by the various categories of lease holders, as may be prescribed by the Central Government.

Question 4 of 5
4. Question
Consider the following statements in relation to arecanut:
1.The cultivation of arecanut is mostly confined to 28º north and south of the equator.
2.Extremes of temperature and wide diurnal variations are not conducive for the healthy growth of the arecanut palms.
3.Karnataka, Kerala and Assam together account for more than 85 percent of its production.
How many of the statements given above are correct?Correct
Incorrect
Why this question—>For Karnataka’s growers, areca a hard nut to crack – The Hindu
Statement 1 is correct—>The cultivation of arecanut is mostly confined to 28º north and south of the equator. Statement 2 is correct—>Extremes of temperature and wide diurnal variations are not conducive for the healthy growth of the arecanut palms. Statement 3 is correct—>Karnataka, Kerala and Assam together account for more than 85 percent of its production. Additional Information
- The arecanut palm is the source of common chewing nut, popularly known as betel nut or Supari.
- India is the largest producer of arecanut and at the same time largest consumer also.
Climate
- The cultivation of arecanut is mostly confined to 28º north and south of the equator. It grows well within the temperature range of 14ºC and 36ºC and is adversely affected by temperatures below 10ºC and above 40ºC. Extremes of temperature and wide diurnal variations are not conducive for the healthy growth of the palms. Arecanut can be grown in areas receiving annual rainfall of 750 mm in Maidan parts of Karnataka to 4,500 mm in Malnad areas of Karnataka. In areas where there is prolonged dry spell, the palms are irrigated. Due to its susceptibility to low temperature, a good crop of arecanut cannot be obtained at an altitude of more than 1000 m MSL.
Soil
- The largest area under the crop is found in gravelly laterite soils of red clay type. It can also be grown on fertile clay loam soils. Sticky clay, sandy, alluvial, brackish and calcareous soils are not suitable for arecanut cultivation.
Production
- Major states cultivating this crop are Karnataka (40%), Kerala (25%), Assam (20%), Tamil Nadu, Meghalaya and West Bengal.
