The Integrated Farming System (IFS) is a holistic agricultural approach that combines multiple enterprises—such as crop production, livestock rearing, and aquaculture—on a single farm. Its core principle is “zero waste,” where the byproducts or waste from one component serve as valuable inputs for another, maximizing resource efficiency

The integrated farming system approach is based on the following objectives:

To minimize the waste from various subsystems of the farm by expanding the symbiotic or synergistic systems between livestock, aquaculture, agriculture, and agroindustry, such that the waste of one process becomes the input for other operations. The waste may be treated or not to provide the means of production, such as energy, fertilizer, and feed, for optimum productivity at minimum cost.
To enhance ecological diversity by selecting the appropriate cropping methodology, cropping, intercropping, to reduce competition including mixed crop rotation, and for water, nutrition, and space.
To use the entire available area effectively and ensure interactions between biotic and abiotic components.
To improve the farm household’s dietary diversity and achieve sustainable livelihoods by diversifying the rural farm to minimize risks.

Economic Significance
- Increases farmer income
  - IFS provides income from multiple sources such as crops, milk, eggs, fish, vegetables, fruits, honey, mushrooms and manure. This improves overall farm profitability.
- Reduces dependence on a single crop
  - Farmers are not fully dependent on one crop or one season. If crop income falls due to drought, pests or price crash, income from dairy, poultry, fishery or horticulture can provide support.
    - It acts as natural insurance against price crash or crop failure
- Reduces cost of cultivation
  - Farm waste, cattle dung, crop residues and biogas slurry can be reused as manure, compost or fodder. This reduces dependence on purchased fertilisers, feed and other external inputs.
    - Waste from one system (crop residue → livestock feed, manure → fish pond) reduces external input costs
- Generates 30–40% more on-farm employment, especially for women in poultry, dairy, horticulture

- Inadequate veterinary and fisheries services at block and village level — animal/fish disease response is slow and unreliable

- Risk aversion — introducing multiple new enterprises simultaneously feels overwhelming; farmers prefer incremental change

Policy & Institutional Reforms
- Create District IFS Convergence Cells integrating Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, and Horticulture under one nodal officer for unified planning and subsidy delivery
- Design composite IFS loan products through NABARD/RBI covering all enterprises under a single credit facility with relaxed collateral norms
- Redesign PMFBY to comprehensively cover all IFS components — crops, livestock, poultry, and fisheries under one umbrella policy
Research & Technology
- IFS models should be developed according to agro-climatic regions, farm size and local resources.
- Deploy AI-powered mobile advisory providing real-time, enterprise-specific management guidance to IFS farmers in local languages
  - Digital advisory services can guide farmers on crop-livestock-fishery integration, disease control, market prices and weather risks.
- Promote IoT-based monitoring — water quality sensors for fish ponds, automated feeding systems for poultry and livestock
Capacity Building & Extension
- Krishi Vigyan Kendras, agricultural universities and extension agencies should train farmers through demonstrations.
