Introduction

The Asiatic wild dog, also called Dhole, is a wild Asian carnivore of the dog family (Canidae).
Other Names: Indian wild dog, whistling dog, red wolf, red dog, and mountain wolf.

Features

Size:It is a sleek, reddish-brown, medium-sized dog.
- It measures up to around 20 inches with a bushy black tail, which adds up to a foot and a half.
Males are generally more muscular than females.
Their broad head and exceptionally sharp jaws give them an iconic facial appearance, which makes their body look more aligned.
These highly social carnivores live in close-knit packs of 2-25 individuals.However, depending on prey availability, they may also hunt alone or in pairs.
They live in clans rather than packs, as the latter term refers to a group of animals that always hunt together. In contrast, dhole clans frequently break into small packs of three to five animals, particularly during the spring season, as this is the optimal number for catching fawns.
It is a diurnal pack hunter which preferentially targets large and medium-sized ungulates.
As dholes do not have the jaw strength to deliver a decisive killing bite, the pack can only succeed by consuming the prey while it is still alive.
Dholes are far less territorial than wolves, with pups from one clan often joining another without trouble once they mature sexually
They are fast runners, excellent swimmers, and impressive jumpers.
They are great communicators and use an eerie whistle to communicate with each other.
Diet: Dholes are hypercarnivores, meaning their diet is at least 70 percent meat, including such diverse species as ibex and hare.
Reproduction: There is usually one dominant, monogamous breeding pair in a pack. In cases with more than one breeding pair, females will den and raise their pups together. The rest of the pack does not breed, instead supporting the dominant pair and their pups, bringing them food and staying behind with the pups while others hunt.

Distribution & Habitat

They are found throughout Central, Eastern and Southeastern Asia.
In India, they are found in three clusters across India, namely the Western and Eastern Ghats, the central Indian landscape, and Northeast India.
The Western and Eastern Ghats are stronghold regions for dholes.
They inhabit dense jungles, steppes, mountains, scrub forests, and pine forests.
