Gross Domestic Product (GDP) vs Gross National Product (GNP)

UPSC Prelims Facts

Must Know
  • GDP measures production within domestic territory.
  • GNP measures income earned by residents.
  • GNP = GDP + Net Factor Income from Abroad (NFIA).
  • If NFIA is positive, GNP > GDP.
  • If NFIA is negative, GDP > GNP.

GDP and GNP are two important macroeconomic indicators used to measure the economic performance of a country. While GDP measures the value of final goods and services produced within the domestic territory of a country, GNP measures the income earned by the residents of a country, whether within the country or abroad. The distinction is important because in a globalised economy, foreign companies may produce within India, while Indian residents and companies may earn income abroad.

Gross Domestic Product (GDP ) vs Gross National Product (GNP)

BasisGross Domestic Product (GDP)Gross National Product (GNP)
MeaningTotal value of final goods and services produced within the domestic territory of a country during a yearTotal value of final goods and services produced by the residents of a country, whether within the country or abroad
Main BasisPlace of productionOwnership/residency of income earner
IncludesProduction by both domestic and foreign producers within the countryIncome earned by residents of the country, whether in the country or abroad
ExcludesProduction by residents outside the countryIncome earned by foreigners within the domestic economy
FormulaGDP = Value of final output produced within domestic territoryGNP = GDP + Net Factor Income from Abroad
Key IdeaWhat is produced within the country? What is earned by the residents of the country?

Example 1: Foreign Company Operating in India

  • Suppose a U.S. company manufactures mobile phones in India.
  • The value of these phones will be included in India’s GDP because they are produced within India’s domestic territory.
  • So, this production affects India’s GDP, but not India’s GNP.

Example 2: Indian Company Operating Abroad

  • Suppose Tata Motors, an Indian company, manufactures cars in the United Kingdom and earns profits there.
  • This production will not be included in India’s GDP because it takes place outside India’s domestic territory.
  • However, the income earned by Tata Motors will be included in India’s GNP because it belongs to an Indian resident/company.
  • So, this income affects India’s GNP, but not India’s GDP.

GDP and GNP measure economic activity from two different angles. GDP focuses on the place of production, while GNP focuses on the residency or ownership of income. Therefore, GDP is useful for understanding domestic production, whereas GNP helps us know the income actually earned by the residents of a country. Together, they provide a clearer picture of national income and economic performance.
