Space Technology | Applications & Importance

Space technology has emerged as one of the most important tools of modern development. It is no longer limited to space exploration or scientific curiosity; rather, it has become deeply connected with everyday life, governance, economy, security and sustainability. Through satellites, launch vehicles, remote sensing, communication systems and navigation networks, space technology helps in weather forecasting, disaster management, agriculture, communication, urban planning, environmental monitoring and national security.

Its importance lies in its ability to provide accurate, large-scale and real-time information about the Earth and its resources. This makes planning, decision-making and service delivery more scientific and efficient. In this sense, space technology acts as a bridge between scientific advancement and practical developmental needs. It supports not only economic growth and strategic capability, but also disaster resilience, climate action and sustainable development.

Importance of Space Technology

  • Communication and Connectivity
    • Space technology enables satellite-based communication across remote, hilly, island and border areas.
    • It supports television broadcasting, mobile communication, internet connectivity, tele-education, telemedicine and emergency communication.
      • GSAT-N1 [GSAT-24] for Direct-To-Home (DTH) services
      • GSAT-N2 [GSAT-20] for broadband connectivity
      • India has a fleet of 19 operational communication satellites, among which GSAT-19, GSAT-29, GSAT-11, and GSAT-N2 are specifically geared towards boosting India’s broadband services. 
        • These satellites are designed to enhance internet connectivity in underserved areas, support in-flight communication, defence networks and disaster management. 
  • Weather Forecasting
    • Satellites help monitor clouds, rainfall, cyclones, storms, temperature, humidity and wind patterns.
    • This improves the accuracy of weather prediction and helps authorities issue early warnings.
    • Better weather forecasting is important for farmers, fishermen, aviation, shipping and disaster preparedness.
      • INSTAT-3DS,along with INSAT-3DR help in the round-the-clock monitoring of severe weather conditions 
      • The INSAT-3DR, INSAT-3DS and Oceansat-3 satellites are also used for cyclogenesis prediction, cyclone detection, monitoring of storm evolution, track prediction and landfall assessment.  
  • Disaster Management
    • Space technology plays a major role in disaster risk reduction and response.
    • Satellites help in early warning, mapping vulnerable areas, tracking cyclones, assessing flood spread, monitoring forest fires and estimating damage after disasters.
    • During disasters, satellite communication also helps restore connectivity when normal communication networks fail.
      • Landslide is monitored using CARTOSAT data 
  • Agriculture and Food Security
    • Satellite data helps in crop monitoring, soil moisture assessment, drought prediction, irrigation planning and estimation of crop acreage.
    • It helps farmers and policymakers take better decisions regarding sowing, harvesting, insurance and food supply management.
    • Remote sensing can also identify pest attacks, crop stress and water scarcity.
      • Satellite data is used for the FASAL programme for crop production forecasting and for supporting crop insurance and agricultural planning. 
  • Water Resource Management
    • Space technology helps in mapping rivers, lakes, reservoirs, wetlands, groundwater potential zones and watershed areas.
    • It supports planning of irrigation projects, flood control, drought monitoring and conservation of water bodies.
    • It also helps in monitoring snow cover and glacier melt, which is important for river systems.
      • Reservoir monitoring — water spread area of 130 reservoirs monitored using RESOURCESAT 
      • Bhuvan, ISRO’s geoportal, provides layers related to hydrology, drainage, basins, watersheds and water bodies, which can support planning and development. 
      • Satellite data is operationally used by the Ministry of Jal Shakti (MoJS) for mapping and monitoring of glacial lakes. 
  • Environmental Monitoring
    • Satellites help monitor forests, biodiversity, land degradation, desertification, pollution, coastal changes and climate-related changes.
    • They provide large-scale and regular data, which helps in evidence-based environmental governance.
    • Space technology is also useful in tracking forest cover, illegal mining, encroachment and habitat loss.
      • FSI uses IRS data for biennial India State of Forest Report 
      • The Indian Forest Fire Response and Assessment System (INFFRAS) provides observations of active forest fires from TERRA and AQUA MODIS data on a near real time basis.  
      • Project Tiger uses advanced satellite imagery and remote sensing data to conduct large-scale habitat assessments, map vital wildlife corridors, and model ecosystem health. 
      • The National Wetland Atlas, prepared by the Space Applications Centre (SAC), ISRO, uses multi-spectral data from Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites to map and monitor the country’s wetland ecosystems 
      • Desertification and Land Degradation Atlas of India, prepared using satellite data 
  • Urban Planning and Infrastructure
    • Satellite imagery supports city planning, land-use mapping, road alignment, smart city development, drainage planning and infrastructure monitoring.
    • It helps identify urban expansion, encroachments, slums, traffic corridors and flood-prone areas.
    • This makes urban governance more scientific and data-based.
      • The Cartosat-2 series satellites, capturing high-resolution imagery, are heavily utilized in India for urban mapping. 
  • Navigation and Transport
    • Space-based navigation systems help in accurate positioning, tracking and route planning.
    • They are useful for aviation, shipping, railways, road transport, logistics, disaster response and military operations.
    • Navigation satellites also support location-based services in daily life.
      • India’s NavIC provides positioning, navigation and timing services. 
  • National Security and Defence
    • Space technology has strategic importance for surveillance, reconnaissance, border monitoring, missile guidance, secure communication and maritime security.
    • Satellites help monitor hostile movements, protect borders, track ships and support defence preparedness.
    • They improve situational awareness and strengthen national security.
      • The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) RISAT-2B and RISAT-2BR1 are advanced Earth observation and radar reconnaissance satellites used for continuous, all-weather, day-and-night border surveillance, anti-infiltration, and national security operations 
      • GSAT-7 (Rukmini) — Navy’s dedicated satellite; links all naval ships, submarines, aircraft 
      • GSAT-7A is a dedicated military communication satellite operated by the Indian Air Force (IAF) to create a secure, centralized network across its assets. It acts as a major force multiplier by linking ground radar stations, airbases, airborne early warning and control (AWACS) aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) 
  • Fisheries and Coastal Management
    • Satellites help identify potential fishing zones by studying sea surface temperature and ocean colour.
    • This helps fishermen reduce search time, save fuel and improve catch.
    • Space technology also supports coastal zone management, cyclone warning, oil spill tracking and monitoring of coastal erosion.
  • Climate Change Studies
    • Space technology helps monitor long-term changes in temperature, glaciers, sea level, forests, oceans and atmospheric gases.
    • This data is essential for climate modelling, adaptation planning and global climate negotiations.
    • It helps understand the pace and impact of climate change.
  • Scientific Research and Exploration
    • Space missions help expand knowledge about the Moon, Mars, planets, asteroids, the Sun and the universe.
