United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)

  • To promote, dynamize, and accelerate industrial development.

  • 173 States are Members of UNIDO.
  • India is a founding Member of the UNIDO. It is both a recipient as well as a contributor to the programmes of UNIDO

UNIDO’s vision is a world without poverty and hunger, where industry drives low-emission economies, improves living standards, and preserves the livable environment for present and future generations, leaving no one behind.

Functions

UNIDO supports its Member States through four mandated functions:

  1. Technical Cooperation 
  2. Action-oriented research and policy-advisory services
  3. Normative standards-related activities
  4. Fostering partnerships for knowledge and technology transfer.

Focus Areas

  • Ending hunger: support businesses from farm to fork, agro-industry development.
  • Climate action: promote renewable energy, energy efficiency, and low-carbon industrial growth.
  • Sustainable supply chains: ensure fair deals for producers in developing countries while conserving scarce resources.

Governance

Policy Organs of UNIDO

  • UNIDO has two main policymaking organs, and one subsidiary organ:

General Conference (GC)

  • Supreme policymaking organ.
  • Determines guiding principles and policies of UNIDO.
  • Approves the budget and work programme.
  • Elects the members of the Industrial Development Board (IDB) and Programme & Budget Committee (PBC).
  • Appoints the Director-General every four years.
    • The Director General heads the UNIDO Secretariat.
  • Meets once every two years.

Industrial Development Board (IDB)

  • Composed of 53 members, elected for a four-year term on a rotational basis.
  • Supervises and reviews implementation of the work programme.
  • Examines regular and operational budgets.
  • Makes recommendations to the General Conference on policy matters, including DG appointment.
  • Meets once a year.

Programme and Budget Committee (PBC)

  • Subsidiary organ of the IDB.
  • Composed of 27 members, elected for a two-year term.
  • Examines the budget, work programme, and financial matters.
  • Provides assistance to the IDB in preparing and reviewing budgetary proposals.
  • Meets once a year.

India - UNIDO

  • India is a founding Member of the UNIDO. 
  • It is both a recipient as well as a contributor to the programmes of UNIDO. 
  • India contributes to the regular budget of UNIDO. 
  • In addition, India also makes an annual voluntary contribution to the Industrial Development Fund (IDF) of UNIDO.
