United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA)

  • Rooted in the United Nations Charter and guided by the transformative 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) upholds the development pillar of the United Nations.
    • The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) upholds the development pillar of the UN Secretariat, headed by the UN Secretary General. 
      • Based at the United Nations headquarters in New York, UN DESA supports deliberations in the UN General Assembly and UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and the implementation of the decision of these bodies
      • UNDESA is part of the United Nations Secretariat. 
  • UNDESA acts as the Secretariat for the SDGs, providing substantive support and capacity-building for the goals and their related thematic issues.
    • Insufficient financing remains one of the greatest bottlenecks that prevents the world from achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. 
    • UN DESA helps Member States close the financing gap for sustainable development through timely, evidence-based, policy advice, and well-targeted capacity-building efforts.  
  • It is also a member of the United Nations Development Group
  • Since 2007, leadership positions in UNDESA have been held by representatives from the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

Evolution

  • UNDESA was formerly known as the UN Department of International Economic and Social Affairs (DIESA). 
    • It resulted from the merger of the Departments for Policy Coordination and Sustainable Development, for Economic and Social Information and Policy Analysis, and for Development Support and Management Services(DDSMS) in 1997. 
    • The DDSMS in turn was formerly known as the Department of Technical Cooperation for Development (DTCD) from its founding in 1978 until 1993

Functions of UN DESA

  • Intergovernmental Support
    • Facilitates major global conferences and summits in the economic, social, and environmental fields.
      • By facilitating major global conferences and summits in the economic, social and environmental fields, as mandated by UN Member States, UN DESA assists countries as they find common ground, set norms, and take decisive steps forward. 
  • Analysis
    • Acts as the think tank of the UN.
    • Generates, analyses, and compiles wide-ranging economic, social, and environmental data and statistics.
    • Advises Member States and stakeholders by identifying trends and policy options to address common global problems.
  • Capacity-Building
    • DESA supports Member States in translating global commitments into local action.
    • Translates UN policy frameworks into national-level programmes.
    • Provides technical assistance to help Member States build national capacities.

Leadership

  • The Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, appointed by the UN Secretary-General, is the head of UN DESA. 
  • The Under-Secretary-General advises the Secretary-General on the three pillars of sustainable development – social, economic and environmental, and nurtures key partnerships with governments, UN agencies and civil society organizations.
