Virtual Private Network (VPN)

A VPN (virtual private network) is an application (app) or service that makes an internet connection private by routing internet traffic through a secure VPN server.

VPNs encrypt personal data and hide online activities from unauthorized third parties, giving users a secure, private internet connection.

In simple words, a VPN acts like a protected tunnel for internet traffic. It hides the user’s real IP address and helps protect data from being easily seen by hackers, internet service providers or other third parties.

By definition, a VPN connection is:

  • Virtual because no physical cables are involved in the connection process.
  • Private because through this connection, no one else can see your data or browsing activity.
  • Networked because multiple devices—your computer and the VPN server—work together to maintain an established link.

How VPN Works?

VPNs work by establishing a secure, encrypted connection between devices and a remote VPN server location and then sending internet traffic through the server. This process masks a user’s real IP address and keeps their browsing history private from hackers, internet service providers (ISPs) and other unauthorized parties.

Key Technologies involved

  • Encryption
    • Encryption converts readable data into an unreadable format known as ciphertext. VPNs rely on strong cryptographic algorithms so that even if data is intercepted, it can’t be understood without the proper keys. This protects sensitive information such as credentials, intellectual property, and internal communications while they’re in transit.
  • Tunneling
    • Tunneling is the process of encapsulating encrypted data inside another network packet so it can travel safely across the internet. The tunnel acts as a private pathway between the user and the destination network. VPN tunneling helps shield traffic from interception, especially on unsecured networks such as a public wireless network, where unencrypted traffic can otherwise be observed or intercepted.
  • Authentication
    • Before a tunnel is established, VPNs authenticate users or devices to confirm they’re allowed to connect. This step ensures that only approved endpoints gain access to internal systems or cloud resources. Together, encryption, tunneling, and authentication form the foundation of how a virtual private network works.

    • Some websites or services may be restricted in certain regions.

    • Since VPN masks the real IP address, it becomes harder to identify the exact physical location of the user.
    • This adds a layer of anonymity.

    • Companies use VPNs to secure communication between branch offices, employees and servers.
    • This helps protect trade secrets, official data and internal communication.
  • Reduces Risk of Surveillance
    • VPN can reduce unnecessary monitoring of browsing activity by external actors.

  • Speed
    • VPNs help speed some internet connections, especially for users who are gaming or engaging in other high-bandwidth activities. They do this by preventing bandwidth throttling, a tactic used by some ISPs to control the amount of data used for certain online activities.
  • Cost
    • VPNs can help reduce price discrimination by websites looking to offer different prices for the same service based on a user’s geo-location. By masking IP addresses, VPNs make it possible for all users to receive the same prices, no matter where they are located.

Disadvantages of VPN

  • Reduced Internet Speed
    • VPN may slow down internet speed because data has to pass through an additional VPN server and encryption process.
    • The speed depends on server location, VPN quality and network conditions.
  • Free VPNs May Be Risky
    • Many free VPNs may collect user data, show intrusive ads, have weak encryption or sell browsing information.
    • Some may even contain malware.
  • Legal and Policy Concerns
    • VPNs may be misused for illegal activities such as cybercrime, fraud, piracy or hiding criminal identity.
    • Because of this, governments may regulate VPN services.
  • May Create Compliance Issues
    • In organisations, employees using unauthorised VPNs may bypass internal security controls.
    • This can create risks for data governance, audit trails and regulatory compliance.
  • Access May Be Blocked by Some Platforms
    • Some streaming services, websites, banking platforms or apps may block VPN traffic for security or licensing reasons.
    • This may reduce usability.
  • False Sense of Anonymity
    • VPN hides the IP address, but it does not make a user completely anonymous.
    • Websites can still track users through cookies, browser fingerprinting, login accounts and device identifiers.
  • Cost of Reliable VPN Services
    • Good VPN services with strong encryption, faster servers and better privacy policies often require paid subscriptions.
    • This may not be affordable for every user.
  • Technical Issues
    • VPN setup may sometimes cause connection errors, app incompatibility, login issues or difficulty accessing local services.
    • Less tech-savvy users may find it confusing.

VPN is an important digital security tool that provides privacy, encryption and safer internet access. It is especially useful for remote work, public Wi-Fi security and protection of sensitive data. However, it is not a complete cybersecurity solution and may have limitations such as reduced speed, dependence on VPN providers, misuse risks and legal concerns. Therefore, VPN should be used responsibly along with broader cybersecurity practices.
