Recession vs Slowdown

Actual GDP does not always grow smoothly. It fluctuates over time as the economy passes through periods of expansion and contraction. These fluctuations in economic activity are known as the business cycle.

Broadly, these movements can be understood as:

  • Upturn – Economic activity and output increase
  • Downturn – Economic activity and output weaken or decline

Recession

  • A recession is a period of significant decline in economic activity.Technically, recession is defined as at least two consecutive quarters of negative real GDP growth.
  • It is generally associated with:
    • Fall in total output
    • Decline in income
    • Rise in unemployment
    • Weak demand
    • Fall in investment
    • Contraction across many sectors of the economy

Recession vs Economic Slowdown

Economic Slowdown

  • An economic slowdown means the economy is still growing, but the growth rate is declining.
  • For example, if GDP growth falls from 8% to 4%, the economy is slowing down, but output is still increasing.

Recession

  • A recession occurs when GDP growth becomes negative and total output actually declines.
  • For example, if real GDP falls from ₹100 lakh crore to ₹98 lakh crore, the economy is producing less than before. This indicates recession.

Example to Understand Slowdown and Recession

Suppose the real GDP of a country is as follows:

YearReal GDPReal GDP Growth
2020₹200 crore
2021₹220 crore10%
2022₹231 crore5%
2023₹235 crore1.7%

The growth rate is falling from 10% to 5% and then to 1.7%. So, this is a case of economic slowdown, not recession.

Why This is Slowdown, Not Recession?

  • Real GDP increased from ₹200 crore to ₹220 crore.
  • Then it increased from ₹220 crore to ₹231 crore.
  • Then it increased from ₹231 crore to ₹235 crore.
  • So, output is still rising, but at a slower rate.
  • Therefore, this is called economic slowdown.

When Would It Become Recession?

  • It would become a recession if real GDP actually starts falling.

For example:

YearReal GDPReal GDP Growth
2023₹235 crore1.7%
2024₹230 crore-2.1%
2025₹224 crore-2.6%

Here, real GDP falls from ₹235 crore to ₹230 crore and then to ₹224 crore. This means the economy is producing less than before. Hence, this is a case of recession.
