Fly Ash

Fly ash is a fine, powdery byproduct produced during the combustion of coal in thermal power plants. It rises with flue gases and is collected using electrostatic precipitators or bag filters.

Composition

  • Major components: Silica (SiO₂), Alumina (Al₂O₃), Iron Oxide (Fe₂O₃), Calcium Oxide (CaO).
  • Contains trace elements such as arsenic, lead, cobalt, copper and mercury.

Uses of Fly Ash

  • Construction Material – Used in cement, bricks, concrete, and tiles due to pozzolanic properties.
  • Soil Stabilization – Improves strength and reduces swelling in soils.
  • Mine Filling & Embankments – Used for land reclamation and road construction.
  • Waste Treatment – Absorbs pollutants and stabilizes hazardous waste.
    • Fly ash is used as an adsorbent for the removal of pollutant from waste water which meets the dual goals of disposal and treatment. 

Fly Ash and Agriculture

  • Since fly ash contains micronutrients like phosphorus, potassium and calcium, improves water holding capacity and soil aeration, it can be suitably used in agriculture sector to improve crop yield.
  • Fly ash can also reclaim saline alkali soil resulting in saving of gypsum.
  • Risks and Concerns :
    • Contains toxic heavy metals (arsenic, lead, mercury, chromium) that may accumulate in soil and crops if used excessively.
    • Requires careful monitoring of dosage and quality.
  • Government Initiative:
    • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) issued the Ash Utilization Notification, 2021 (dated 31 December 2021), mandating all coal and lignite-based thermal power plants to achieve 100% ash utilization in eco-friendly ways within prescribed timelines.
    • Agriculture as an Eco-friendly Use
      • The Notification specifically prescribes “agriculture in a controlled manner based on soil testing” as one of the permissible uses.
      • Controlled application of fly ash improves soil health by:
        • Increasing nutrient capacity.
        • Supplying micronutrients like Fe, Zn, and Mo to the soil.
        • Improving soil texture and water retention.
    • Current Status (FY 2024–25)
      • Out of 326.8 million tonnes of ash utilized across sectors,
      • About 4 million tonnes (1.2%) was applied in agriculture.
      • This shows that agriculture currently has a small share in overall ash utilization, but it remains a potential avenue for circular economy and soil enrichment.
    • Significance
      • Encourages sustainable management of thermal power plant waste.
      • Reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers by supplementing micronutrients.
      • Helps in reducing land degradation and restoring soil fertility when used judiciously.

Environmental Concerns

  • Air Pollution: Fine particles may escape into the atmosphere, causing respiratory problems.
  • Water Pollution: Leaching of heavy metals from ash ponds contaminates groundwater and surface water.
  • Land Degradation: Improper disposal leads to land occupation and ecological imbalance.
  • Health Hazards: Can cause lung diseases, skin problems, and long-term exposure risks.
