ToggleThe Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is a set of guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to regulate the conduct of political parties, candidates and governments during elections. It aims to ensure free and fair elections, maintain a level playing field, and prevent misuse of official machinery for electoral advantage.
The Model Code of Conduct is an important instrument for maintaining electoral fairness and democratic ethics. However, changing campaign practices, digital misinformation, hate speech and limited enforceability have created new challenges. Therefore, MCC must be strengthened through timely enforcement, digital regulation, limited statutory backing and greater accountability of political parties, while preserving the Election Commission’s independence.
